Information about Reade Volunteer Fire Company

In the Spring of 1946, several men from Reade Township met with the purpose of forming a volunteer fire company. Those charter members formed what had long been the Reade Volunteer Fire Company. The original fire apparatus was housed in a store basement in Blandburg. During the early years of the fire company, the firefighters were alerted to an emergency through the activation of the siren at the Harbison-Walker Refactory in Blandburg. The name of the fire company was at one time changed to the Reade Township Volunteer Fire Company.

Now over 60 years later, the name has changed back to the Reade Volunteer Fire Company, the apparatus is housed in its own three bay station with offices, kitchen and social hall and members are alerted to emergencies through UHF radios while the station siren is activated from the Cambria County 911 center 30 miles away.

While so much has changed over the years, one thing remains constant: our committment to protecting and preserving the lives and property of the residents of Reade Township and surrounding communities as well as those who may be simply passing through.

Our coverage area consists of the entire Reade Township in rural northwest corner of Cambria County in central Pennsylvania. We respond on nine different box cards covering 39 square miles. Most of the area is agricultural/undeveloped. However, with SR53, SR253 and SR865 traversing the area, many calls are of the motor vehicle nature. There are approximately 1,764 residents, 1,000 residences and numerous businesses. The area is 85% hydrant protected. Reade Township borders White and Dean townships in Cambria county to the south, Beccaria and Gulich townships in Clearfield county to the north and west and Antis township in Blair county to the east. As we are located at least 10 miles from the next nearest fire company, many of our calls are simultaneously dispatched.

We are a small in number fire company but big in heart in the duties we perform. Proud of our heritage and excited about our future, the firefighters at Station 63 are eager to assist those in need.

We are a volunteer fire company that strives to provide emergency and non-emergency services through continuing education and training. Although answering emergency calls and training are top priorities for our department, much of our time and energy goes into fundraising to enable us to purchase new safety equipment and emergency vehicles.
